BackElisa and YLE developing the TV of the future
Elisa Corporation, press release 31 March 2010
Elisa will improve its position as the Finnish forerunner in IPTV, and YLE will improve its position as a provider of top-class TV content, when Elisa Viihde customers can view the most recent and most popular web content of YLE Areena as of 31 March. The viewers can choose from Finnish entertainment, sports, drama, news and children’s shows.
The cooperation aims at creating new experiences and providing the preconditions for a new kind of TV of the future. It is a six-month beta test, and after the test period the experiences obtained will be assessed before a decision on the future is made. Therefore, Elisa and YLE request feedback and development ideas from the viewers so that they can influence their future viewing experiences.
?Elisa Viihde customers can, as the first viewers in Finland, view the 200 most recent and most popular TV programmes of YLE Areena on their own TV sets. They can easily see the web content using their TV remote to watch the news at a time that best suits them.. Elisa’s objective is to provide its customers with more flexibility and new features to make their TV experience even more entertaining. Elisa’s strength is its ability to provide services that create experiences, and YLE is able to provide high-quality content – we believe that this combination is a key to successful cooperation that will attract viewers,? says Veli-Matti Mattila, Elisa’s Managing Director.
?YLE Areena offers the most versatile Finnish web contents, and we believe that now is the time to offer this content directly to the living rooms of the millions of viewers. The opportunity to watch children’s shows any time will surely be a great benefit for families with children, for example. In the future, YLE will offer Areena in a variety of new environments. Because Elisa is extremely willing to provide IPTV services to be viewed on your TV set, it is only natural for us to start our cooperation with Elisa,? says Mikael Jungner, YLE’s Managing Director.
TV is changing
According to estimates by Elisa and YLE, the manner in which people watch TV will clearly change in the next few years.
?Major changes are to be expected within the next few years. Consumers will watch most of the programmes on their TVs but more often without any plan, schedules or timing. The most major change will be that viewers will be able to use their TV remote to access an extensive selection of shows and movies whenever they like,? say Mattila and Jungner.
The Areena content will be available on Elisa Viihde immediately after each show has been broadcasted, and will remain available for approximately one week. Up until now, the YLE Areena content has been available over the internet or with a mobile phone. Feedback regarding YLE and comments regarding the YLE Areena content of Elisa Viihde can be given at Elisa Viihde Palsta, http://palsta.elisa.fi.
