BackElisa and Fortum to implement an environmentally friendly server centre solution in Espoo
Press release 31 March 2010
Elisa is investing in environmentally friendly and energy-efficient operations. Elisa, together with Fortum, will implement an internationally unique and eco-friendly energy solution at its new server centre in Espoo. In the solution, heat generated by servers will be utilised in full in district heating in Espoo.
The energy-efficiency of Elisa’s server facility located in Espoo will be first-rate. If built as a traditional solution, the server facility’s carbon dioxide emissions would have been 2,000 TCO2 on estimate. However, the emission balance of the new computer facility solution to be implemented with Fortum will be negative, and the facility will reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the Espoo region by about 7,500 TCO2. The solution is based on the joint production of cooling for the server facility and district heating.
The total solution includes secured uninterrupted power supply that will be implemented through reliable electrical networks and using Fortum’s dynamic UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) and stand-by supply systems. Furthermore, battery systems that contain plenty of heavy metals are not needed because of the electricity generation solution.
- Also, internationally speaking, Elisa’s new server centre is a unique solution that takes eco-friendliness into account. It also enables the next generation’s centralised software solutions (cloud computing), which utilise more efficient server resources, creating a new era in the energy efficiency of information technology. As a responsible operator in the ICT industry, we are determined to reduce our energy consumption within our production infrastructure, thus doing our share to combat climate change, says Kimmo Pentikäinen, Director of Environmental Affairs at Elisa.
- Our energy solution for the server facility is very energy-efficient because it enables the recovery of thermal energy produced by computers in full into the district heating network at all times. Reliability and ease of use guaranteed by the dynamic UPS and stand-by supply systems included in the solution also played a central part in our offered solution, says Ilkka Niiranen, Development Manager at Fortum.
