BackElisa provides its corporate customers with a desktop as an online service
Press release, 30 November 2009
To replace the traditional desktop, Elisa provides a virtual desktop where an electronic desktop and the software required by the customer is imported online as a centralised service. As a result of the virtual desktop, the customer gets access to a workstation-independent tool which is secure and cost-effective. This makes the work process more flexible.
- A virtual desktop is extremely convenient and safe to carry along with you, and it is not bound to a traditional workstation. You can leave your work computer at the office, and use the same user-specific desktop at home on a netbook, for example. Moreover, for Mac and Linux users, it is a great advantage that the virtual desktop is independent of the operating system, says Markku Vartiainen, head of ICT solutions at Elisa.
A virtual desktop is like any standard workstation, but it enables use which is not reliant on the time, location and terminal device. Application acquisition and maintenance is cost-effective. Besides standard communication and customer service applications provided by Elisa, such as Microsoft Office and CRM software, customers can also include their own business applications in the service. By connecting the virtual desktop with the Elisa OIWA service package, customers get access to an extensive ICT solution as an online service without making investments.
The desktop, provided over the Internet to our customers, introduces cost-efficiency, faster deployment of new software and changes to existing software, as well as a well-timed approach to various data security updates. Through the virtual desktop, Elisa automatically ensures a secure distribution of services and applications. Elisa also takes care of investments, as well as contract and licence management, which releases more time for the customer to do their own business.
- The customer does not have to worry about workstation-specific updating, equipment defects or data security, since the virtual desktop is provided as a service upon the application rental principle. If the user's computers breaks down, the documents processed by him or her will not be lost – instead, they will be safe and sound on the virtual desktop, immediately available on a co-worker's computer, for example, says Vartiainen.
