BackFinns sent a record-high number of messages during the holidays
Press release, 4 January 2010
As in previous years, the traffic volumes reached a peak over Christmas and New Year. In comparison to a regular day, an immense amount of messages were sent. Excluding the peaks, the message traffic in the holidays mainly turned out well.
On Christmas Eve, the number of text messages sent was about 2.2 times the number on a regular day. The number of messages was slightly lower than last Christmas. The number of multimedia messages sent was about 3.7 times higher than on a normal day, and the traffic volume corresponded to the previous year.
At the turn of the year, from 31 December to 1 January, the number of text messages sent was the same as last year. The number of messages was about 2.2 times higher than on a normal day. The number of multimedia messages sent was slightly higher than last year, and the number was 2.6 times higher than on a normal day.
On Christmas Eve, the most popular time for sending was from noon to 2 pm, and on New Year's Eve, from 11 pm to 1 am, during which some messages reached their recipients after a delay. At best, a total of 1.6 million messages were transmitted per hour.
The communications mainly turned out well
Despite the peak times, the text and multimedia message traffic on Christmas and New Year mainly turned out well. During both Christmas and New Year, text message traffic functioned as usual. On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, there were peaks in multimedia traffic, causing delays in message transmission.
The peaks were anticipated by forecasting the traffic volumes and adding network capacity. After the Christmas Eve message volumes, which were larger than expected, the network functionality and the adequacy of capacity were further secured for New Year, which meant that the New Year traffic was more fluent.
